Day 1: Arusha - Rongai
Gate (1950m) - First Caves camp (2600m)
After breakfast, drive for 4hrs to Rongai gate
then proceed to First Caves camp through the montane forest where you will
spend the night.
Day 2: First Caves camp
(2600m)-Kikelewa Cave (3600m)
The trail continues up towards Kibo, passing
Second Cave (3450m) en-route, and reaching Kikelewa Cave. This section is
mainly moorland and ridges. Overnight at 3rd Cave camp (Kikelewa Caves)
Day 3: Third Cave
camp (3800m)-Buffalo Camp (4100m) Ascend to
junction, then begin little used northern circuit route before reaching Buffalo
camp for the night.
Day 4: Buffalo camp
(4100m)-Moir Hut (4200m)
Continue the circuit to Moir Hut, 5hrs.
Acclimatization hike options available. Night at Moir Hut.
Day 5: Moir Hut
–Lava Tower (4500m) : - Walk to
Lava Tower, 5hrs.
Day 6: Lava Tower-Karanga
Descend to Barranco Valley at 3940m, before
climbing Barranco Wall and walking to Karanga Camp at 4000m, 5-7 hrs
Day 7: Karanga
camp (4000m)-Barafu Hut (4600m)
Continue with the climb to Barafu Hut at 4600m,
3-5 hrs. Rest to be ready for early morning ascending to the summit.
Day 8: Barafu Hut
- Uhuru Peak (5895m)-Mweka Hut(3100m)
Early morning before dawn you attempt the summit.
This takes you to the ice-capped summit. You trek up the highest point in
Africa, Uhuru peak 5,896m. Walk back to Barafu from the summit. Have a well
deserved rest before heading down to Millennium Camp (3800m). Night at Mweka
Day 9: Mweka Hut
- Mweka Gate (1980m)-Moshi
Continue descending through Mweka Gate, then
proceed to Mweka village where you will board the vehicle and transfer to Moshi town for the night.
