Best Beach Experience is East Coast

EAST COAST ZANZIBAR.

Matemwe Beach Village.

Matemwe Beach Village is situated on the northeast coast of Zanzibar, one kilometre north of Matemwe Village. It's a 45-minute drive from Stone Town.

Matemwe Beach Village is located on the northeast coast of Zanzibar. It's within excellent proximity to Mnemba Island, which offers some of the best diving off mainland Zanzibar

The simple makuti-thatched lodge and bungalows are situated along a glorious strip of palm-fringed beach. The main lodge has comfortable living areas, friendly staff and a very sociable atmosphere generated by the type of clientele they attract. Gail, the lodge's South African manager, has put a lot of effort into upgrading the guesthouse and making it the special place it is today. Her success is evident in all the stylish touches and attention to detail, which give the place a great feel. All rooms are provided with cheery sunhats, beach baskets, kikois (local sarongs) and umbrellas - everything needed for a lazy day at the beach.
We especially love the open-walled lounge with its colourful array of floor cushions and low tables, which overlook the ocean. Just the right spot to play games or swap travel stories with fellow guests. There's also a cosy pub in which to chill and enjoy local beers, fresh fruit juices or cocktails.

If you're on honeymoon or just want to spoil your partner, splash out on the romantic new honeymoon suite (created by Gail) with its open living spaces, circular pool, outdoor bathroom, own chef and private beach. It's certainly one of the best suites on the island. Go on, doesn't your partner deserve it?
Matemwe Beach has a five-star PADI-affiliated dive operation called One Ocean. They have excellent diving facilities and well-qualified staff. Of all the dive operators we have used in Zanzibar, we rate One Ocean
at Matemwe as one of the finest.

There's also plenty to keep non-divers occupied. If you ever tire of lazing about on the beach, you can take a cruise in a dhow, snorkel in the lagoon, bicycle along the beach or wander about the local village. There's always someone to play cards with in the pub and lots of socialising in the evenings. This is really a great place to just unwind and relax.
On full-moon nights guests are invited to view the rising of the moon from the beach where they enjoy sparkling wine, compliments of the lodge. These and other little touches really makes for a memorable experience.
If you're looking for excellent value for money, a great stretch of beach and superb diving, or a romantic wedding venue,
Matemwe Beach Village is a fantastic choice. We can highly recommend it for just about any traveler to Zanzibar

Rooms.

There are 16 rooms and 6 suites, one of which - the Asali suite - is completely self-contained. The 16 thatched rooms are in close proximity of the beachfront. Seven of these are located at the front of the grounds; just far enough from the beach to give protection against the wind, which sometimes buffets the coastline, but close enough to afford a scenic view of the ocean. They have good views of the ocean from their verandas.

The remaining rooms are situated slightly further back towards the tropical vegetation. All rooms are constructed from stone and makuti thatching. Some are detached, while others are in groups of two or three.
All rooms are comfortably furnished to a
Zanzibar
theme. They have ceiling fans, and two of the rooms have air conditioning, but you pay a little more if you want to stay in one of these. All the beds have mosquito nets for your protection.

A popular addition to
Matemwe Beach Village
is the ultra-romantic Asali honeymoon suite. It's situated almost on the beachfront, some distance from the rest of the lodge, creating a private getaway for newly weds or romantic couples.
This enormous house has a double room, main living area with a plunge pool in the centre and a little kitchen. We love the outside shower, where you can enjoy a blissful shower under the stars. There's also an indoor bathroom. Although considerably more expensive than the standard rooms, the Asali suite is definitely worth splashing out on. If you're after even more seclusion, a dedicated chef can be booked to serve your meals in the suite. You can, of course, always find lively company at the main lodge when you need it.

In response to the Asali Suite’s popularity, 5 Shamba Suites were recently added to the existing accommodation options. While not entirely as self-contained as the Asali Suite, these funky and uniquely decorated suites offer a romantic setting for couples and a comfortable space for families. Their individual design allows for specially arranged romantic dinners – great for honeymooners.

Dining.

The restaurant is situated in the main thatched lodge area. Such is the pleasant vibe at Matemwe, that guests often move their tables together. If you want a particularly romantic evening, you can dine on the beach (only two couples a night though) while sitting on reed matting and cushions. If you're booked in the Asali honeymoon suite, you'll probably opt to have meals brought to you by the suite's dedicated chef.

Swahili recipes are used in combination with fresh, local ingredients, so you'll taste authentic
Zanzibar
cuisine. The menu changes daily and includes options of fish, chicken or red meat with vegetarian dishes available on request. We found the bar’s small but varied selection of South African wines quite impressive.
The breakfast menu also changes from day to day and includes fresh fruit, cereals and fruit juices as well as cooked options of pancakes, eggs, bacon etc.

We are a modestly sized hotel, with ten traditional beach-side cottages, and an intimate atmosphere.

The perfect beach

The Pongwe Beach Hotel offers a sublime paradise island experience. The bay's azure blue waters — protected by the reef one kilometre from the shore — are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. If the midday sun becomes too strong you can retreat into the shade of the palm trees that line the white sandy beach, and sip a long, cool drink

Relax

Pongwe Beach is a tranquil location — the ideal place to relax and enjoy Zanzibar’s distinctive, mellow pace. You can dive into the crystal clear waters of the Indian ocean, or stretch out and soak up the sun on the beach. It is the ideal retreat for those looking for that extra special honeymoon, or a holiday with an air of exclusivity.

Enjoy

We have our own traditional wooden long boat with which our guests may gain access to deep waters before and beyond the reef. This provides the ideal opportunity to go game fishing for tuna, marlin, barracuda and king fish. We also have snorkeling out at Mnemba Atoll where you can will find many coral species and marine life; and at Kizimkazi where sharks, dolphins and turtles can be found.  BREEZES ZANZIBAR BEACH HOTEL.

We want you all to fall in love with Zanzibar,
particularly our kind, smiling &
gentle staff,
our
breathtaking beach on the most private and
untouched part of Zanzibar, the rich &
exotic fabrics,
the painstakingly carved furniture, our
untouched corals & our whispering Palm trees.

HISTORY;

In 1992 we came to Zanzibar with a romantic idea of opening a hotel. We wanted to create a home, which was exotic and personalized, with high standards yet unmarred by the lack of personalization of chain hotels that we have experienced in our many years of traveling. Our family was based in East Africa and been in the hospitality business for over 30 years. With both “the daughters” Paulina and Nathalie studying hotel management at the prestigious school of Hotel management at Cornell University we were convinced that a destination as exotic and delightful as Zanzibar needed a luxury hotel that reflected the wonderful sense of mysticism and culture which we had fallen in love with.

And so we started to build Breezes…we located our favorite site, which we selected with a stringent criterion; a beautiful beach, far away from other hotel developments to ensure privacy for our guests and an area where we felt a connection with the people of the local village.   We then proceeded to design and build our first hotel.   We could write a book about our experiences…, which in turn would have been a comedy.   A piece of land with only sand and palm trees was turned into our vision. We installed a state of the art water desalinization plant and ran the hotel on generators and eventually assisted the local government in funding electrical connection to the main line, the road was partially tarmaced and then graded and in time a police station set up.

Those were the logistics…now to the design.   Every furniture item was painstakingly hand carved by our dedicated team of 50 carpenters, the exotic silks and fabrics were hand sewn by our diligent tailors and we personally visited shops, museums and houses trying to find the right pieces of antique furniture to showcase the magnificent designs of Zanzibar's bygone days

The months without air conditioning, electricity, a diet of crab and fresh fish, dealing with the 350 construction workers   remain among the most challenging but memorable times of our lives.   We had an incredible opportunity to connect with the Zanzibari people and learn to work in a unique culture and environment.

Our staff were trained by us with our team of managers who were brave enough to assist us on a remote island in opening a 5 star hotel.   The first time we setup interviews, so many turned up for the waiters position that we had to eliminate them by making them run around the pool with full glasses of water-those that spilled the least were short listed - a creative way to hiring!   After that we went about training with a staff of 280 and opened the hotel.

And here we are now, as a family owned and run business we are so proud of the accolades and last year we were nominated among the top five resorts in Africa and won the “Best Resort in Tanzania” at the World Travel Awards.
